Kurt Froman was the Resident Choreographer of Billy Elliot, The Musical on Broadway and the 2nd National Tour, focusing on all of the ballet and modern dance elements in the show for the five boys playing the role of "Billy" as well as the choreography for "Mrs. Wilkinson", the ballet teacher in the show. Kurt was the Associate Choreographer for the film, Black Swan, responsible for training and coaching Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, and overseeing the Corps de Ballet. He was the on set advisor to director Darren Aronofsky, making sure the movement looked credible and making last minute adjustments to the dancers and actors between takes. Natalie Portman personally thanked Kurt in her Oscar Acceptance speech for their work together.
Kurt has also taught ballet to actress Rooney Mara, and coached her in movement for her role in the upcoming Terrence Malick Project. When Rooney was being photographed for Vogue Magazine's "The Vogue 120", she asked him to supervise her positions with Givenchy Creative Director, Riccardo Tisci. Kurt was invited to stage a work for the Paris Opera Ballet's Tribute to Jerome Robbins, has acted as associate choreographer for commercials in LA, and has been a guest teacher at Broadway Dance Center and Barnard College. Former students have been accepted on scholarship to major ballet schools, including the School of American Ballet.
Kurt began his dance education in New York after being awarded the first Rudolf Nureyev Scholarship, which allowed him to study at the School of American Ballet's "Special" Advanced Men's Class. After six months, Kurt was invited to join the New York City Ballet, where he danced senior corps de ballet and soloist parts for over seven years. Kurt's move to the Broadway world came after being cast in the leading role of James in the Twyla Tharp/Billy Joel show, Movin' Out. Kurt was in the Broadway revival of Pal Joey at Studio 54, as well as City Center Encores!- Juno, and most recently On Your Toes. He did principal roles with the Suzanne Farrell Ballet at the Kennedy Center, including the role of the Hoofer in Balanchine's Slaughter on 10th Ave. Other television and film work includes Smash, the Biography Channel's Biography - Natalie Portman: The Professional, Black Swan where he was the Understudy to 'Siegfried and danced with Mila Kunis, Across the Universe, Center Stage, SNL, and several Live From Lincoln Center telecasts.
