Joy Karley, MA holds a Master’s degree in Biomechanics and Athletic Training from San Diego State University and a Bachelor of Science in Modern Dance from Kent State University. Her background also includes extensive training in classical ballet, jazz, tap, Latin, and theater dance. She studied at the School of Cleveland Ballet and has performed with companies in Ohio, California, Washington DC, New Jersey and New York. She has taught students of all ages and abilities, at studios and professional training schools. Joy has developed unique teaching methodology combining artistry with movement science to make the most of a dancer’s abilities.
Joy is fully certified in both Pilates Mat and Reformer/Apparatus, and has trained in both contemporary and classical Pilates styles. As a Master Trainer, international fitness presenter, and writer for over 15 years, Joy has designed programming and training curriculum for major club chains and for Jazzercise, an international fitness franchising company. She is a Balanced Body University Faculty member, training new Pilates instructors throughout the US & beyond. Joy owns Gotham City Pilates in NYC, a Pilates studio and instructor training center.

Whether you have foot pain or you want to prevent it, one thing is for sure – we all want to avoid it. Even if you are not a dancer or athlete, you still depend on your feet to get you through the day - literally.
Feet, often overlooked and under-trained, can be the underlying cause of a multitude of problems. That little ache in your back may not have anything to do with your back. Your feet may also be hampering your performance and limiting your athletic potential. Other than the selection of an attractive shoe, most of us do not pay much attention to our feet.
This workshop will cover basic anatomy and biomechanics, alignment, gait, choosing the appropriate shoes as well as the implications of various footwear choices. Strengthening and corrective exercises, evaluation techniques, stretches, releases, and the use of various props and training tools will be covered. Open to and appropriate for dancers & non-dancers, any age or fitness level.
